Advocates Family Coordinator, Pam McKillop, discusses her decision to apply for Premium Assistance.

Once my daughter, Kate, was receiving Supplemental Security Income – and thus eligible for MassHealth – her father and I decided to have a conversation about if she should continue to remain on his private health insurance. I was hoping that she could keep the private insurance (in addition to MassHealth), as I thought this might provide more choices in her health care.

As we were trying to weigh the cost-to-benefit ratio for this, I happened to attend a family meeting where I learned about Premium Assistance.

If you have a family member with MassHealth and pay other health insurance premiums as well, you may be eligible for the MassHealth Standard/CommonHealth Premium Assistance program (MSCPA). MSCPA offers financial assistance to help offset the cost of your private health care premium. The state provides this incentive to help families maintain their private insurance as their primary insurance. To learn more about program eligibility or to apply, visit Massachusetts Family Voices.

If your child is not on MassHealth, he or she may be eligible for MassHealth/CommonHealth based on disability not income. There are a number of programs that are only available to individuals on MassHealth, so it is worth reviewing.
