Each year, families caring for a loved one with an intellectual or developmental disability have the opportunity to apply for a grant from the Fred Gaspari Fund for Families to help make caregiving a little easier. This fall, 23 families received grants to support their loved one, totaling more than $11,000.
Caregivers are using their grants in a variety of ways including for swimming lessons, sensory items, respite care, and much more.
“The goal of the Gaspari Fund is to help more families make it possible for their loved ones with disabilities to live a better life in ways that make sense to them," says Jeff Keilson, senior vice president at Advocates. "One of my personal priorities has been, what can we do to lessen the stress for family caregivers."
Since 2009, The Gaspari Fund has distributed more than $100,000 to families through more than 260 grants.
