Each fall, caregivers of loved ones with intellectual or developmental disabilities are invited to apply for a grant through Advocates' Fred Gaspari Fund for Families. This year, 21 family caregivers were awarded grants to help support their loved one, totaling $10,500.
“This has been an especially challenging year for caregivers, with many families facing reduced income and decreased access to respite care and day services for their loved one,” says Jeff Keilson, senior vice president of strategic planning at Advocates. “The goal of the Gaspari Fund is to help more families make it possible for their loved ones with disabilities to live a better life in ways that make sense to them.”
Families will use their grants in a variety of ways including for therapeutic horseback riding lessons, home exercise equipment, and respite care. Several recipients will use the funds to help make up for financial hardships due to the pandemic or for remote learning assistance.
Since 2009, more than 200 families have received grants totaling $80,500 through the Fred Gaspari Fund.
