FRANKLIN – Nearly $300,000 in criminal justice and health care was saved last year due to the presence of a clinician on-scene during Franklin and Medway police calls, and 97% of those who were eligible for arrest diversion were diverted from arrest, according to a recently released report.
The report was conducted for the Franklin/Medway Jail Diversion Program, and was prepared by Adriana Tarantino, program training & research coordinator for Advocates Inc., the Ashland-based nonprofit that provides the clinicians used in the police calls.
Launched in 2018, the jail diversion program pairs specially-trained crisis clinicians from Advocates Inc. with police officers in Franklin and Medway to help people experiencing mental health crises get the assistance they need on-scene - and without sending them directly into the criminal justice systemThe program’s clinician, Kallie Montagano, responds to calls with patrol officers, and provides immediate on-scene de-escalation, assessment and referrals for individuals in such crises.
